The Association of Design Departments and Schools in Japanese Public Universities was formed in 2019 by design departments and graduate schools in Japanese public universities. These design departments and graduate schools in Japanese public universities have joined forces to collaborate on improving and developing design education and research. In March 2022, the Association of Design Departments and Schools in Japanese Public Universities published Design Academia, its 2021 yearbook summarizing the activities of the universities which participate in the association.<\/p>\n
Also included is a report on the 3rd Association of Design Departments and Schools in Japanese Public Universities Conference held in September 2021. This year’s symposium is themed “New Normal: The New Relationship between Society and Design,” The discussion part of the report provides insight into the current trends in design studies in the social climate and the visions that each university is pursuing. The second half of the information introduces Kyushu University’s Center for Designed Futures, which publishes “Design Academia” and describes its future initiatives.<\/p>\n
Design Academia is the book that affords a comprehensive view of the unique character of design departments and schools in universities throughout Japan. We hope that it will be a helpful resource for young people aspiring to a university design department or graduate school, as well as for businesses and organizations considering collaboration or joint research with university design departments and graduate schools.<\/p>\n
